Bird Migration Explorer Takes Flight: Learn about bird migration with Audubon’s interactive platform

Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis invites you to browse the new Bird Migration Explorer. National Audubon Society released the user-friendly platform to allow anyone with an Internet connection to explore the world of migratory bird species. You can use Bird Migration Explorer to learn about 458 bird species, such as migration routes, range maps, important bird areas, and conservation challenges.

Here are some of the ways you can explore bird migration:
Bird Migration Maps
The Bird Species section includes bird migration maps that show the different routes birds follow in their journey from North America through the Neotropics, visualizing how all the different habitats are connected across borders.

Species Location
The location sections offers a list of specific migration hot spots and list Important Birding Areas. You can explore those hot spots in specific routes or for specific bird species. Focusing conservation resources on the locations that a particular bird species migrates through can increase the impact of conservation efforts.

Conservation Challenges
This section of the Bird Migration Explorer guides users through the types of obstacles a particular bird species faces during migration, including seasonal challenges. This section offers a repository of topics related to conservation of habitats and birds.

Bird Migration Explorer is the product of several institutions, like eBird, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Motus Wildlife Tracking System who shared large data sets contributed by professional and citizen scientists. Banding monitoring stations, including our chapter-supported Monitoring of Overwinter Survival (MoSI) station in Honduras, store data in US Geological Survey database, and several other sources is used to get the visualization in this migration explorer.
